Division of Consumer Affairs Cites Unlicensed Movers
Following Undercover Investigation
NEWARK—More than 30 moving companies have been issued a Notice of Violation, and assessed a $2,500 civil penalty, after each was found to be an unlicensed mover during an undercover investigation conducted by the State Division of Consumer Affairs earlier this month.
The Division of Consumer Affairs, which regulates in-state movers, requires them to be licensed annually. Movers must have cargo liability insurance, in addition to meeting other requirements, in order to obtain a state license.
"Unlicensed movers put consumers and their possessions at risk, since many do not have insurance," said Thomas R. Calcagni, Acting Director of the State Division of Consumer Affairs. "Other than a cell phone number, consumers may not know anything about an unlicensed mover. Licensure requires the mover to tell us who they are and where they are located."
Consumer Affairs investigators posed as a father and daughter who needed to move the daughter’s personal items out of storage and to the father’s New Jersey home, when they contacted movers who had posted on Craigslist and on other internet sites. The Division has contacted Craigslist to discuss unlicensed movers who use its web site.
When 19 movers arrived at a self-storage facility in Belleville during the two-day operation, Consumer Affairs investigators and New Jersey State Police from the Transportation Safety Bureau checked driver and vehicle records and inspected the trucks for mechanical defects. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which regulates interstate movers, also checked records.
An additional 15 movers were cited for unlicensed operation based on advertising their services to the public.
The 34 movers, listed below, have the option of agreeing to apply for licensure and paying a $1,250 civil penalty to resolve the Notice of Violation. Each mover has the option of requesting a hearing to contest the Notice.
