Acting Governor Codey Proclaims Feb. 28 - March 4 Weights and Measures Week

NEWARK - Acting Governor Richard J. Codey has proclaimed the week of February 28 to March 4 as Weights and Measures Week in recognition of municipal, county and state employees who inspect and test a variety of weighing and measuring devices.

The proclamation reads, in part, that "this week recognizes the indispensable work of the dedicated men and women of the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures in enforcing the laws governing the accuracy and use of weighing and measuring devices and the attentive preservation of standards."

Established by Governor Woodrow Wilson in 1911, the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures is celebrating its 94th anniversary. The Office, a unit within the State Division of Consumer Affairs, oversees the testing of pumps at gas stations, price scanners in stores and produce scales, among other devices.

"Consumers depend on the work of the men and women in the Office of Weights and Measures in their daily lives. With fuel prices up sharply, no one wants to pay for gasoline that they did not receive because the pump was defective or not properly calibrated. The Office of Weights and Measures ensures that consumers get the correct quantity of what they are paying for," Attorney General Peter C. Harvey said.

Acting Director Burstein noted that consumers should look for the sticker that is affixed to a weighing or measuring device following inspection and certification for proper operation.

"That sticker indicates to the consumer that the gas pump, scanner or scale has been inspected and checked for accuracy," Burstein said. "If a sticker is missing, or if the certification date shown on the sticker has expired, consumers should contact their local Office of Weights and Measures or our State Office."
