Attorney General Farber Recognizes Weights & Measures Week
NEWARK - Attorney General Zulima V. Farber has joined Governor Jon S. Corzine in proclaiming March 5-11 Weights and Measures Week, to recognize municipal, county and state employees who inspect and test a variety of weighing and measuring devices in New Jersey.
“The men and women who work in the state, county and municipal offices of Weights and Measures are responsible for creating a fair marketplace where consumers can shop with trust and confidence. They are also charged with the duty of ensuring that all businesses comply with weighing and measurement standards. It is important to recognize these individuals for their efforts and hard work,” Attorney General Zulima V. Farber said.
Established by Governor Woodrow Wilson in 1911, the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year. Weights and Measures is the office that oversees the testing of gas station pumps, meters used for home fuel oil deliveries, price scanners in stores and many more devices that are used on a daily basis.
“We want to ensure that whether consumers are stopping for gas or shopping for fresh produce, they can do so without worrying about being charged unfairly,” Director Kimberly Ricketts said. “Businesses should pride themselves on the integrity they display each day while interacting with consumers.”
The State Office of Weights and Measures is located in Avenel, and can be reached at
732-815-4840. A list of municipal and county Offices of Weights and Measures contact telephone numbers are available at http://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/weights/county.htm
