General Questions

  1. Must I be a citizen of the United States to be eligible for licensure?

    No. New Jersey State law allows for all individuals, regardless of citizenship status, to obtain a professional or occupational license in New Jersey if all requirements for licensure are met. Individuals with undocumented status are eligible for licensure and a social security number is not required for licensure.

  2. How do I request to have a verification of my New Jersey chiropractic license sent to another state board?

    You need to write to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, P.O. Box 45004, Newark New Jersey 07101 and request a verification of your license. The fee for a licensure verification is $40.00. In your written request please include your name, you New Jersey license number, and the name and address of the state board that you wish your verification to be mailed to. Please enclose with your written request a $40.00 certified check or money order made payable to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. In the event the other state board has a form that needs to be completed by the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, please include that form with your written request.

  3. How do I request a duplicate license?

    You need to write to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, P.O. Box 45004, Newark New Jersey 07101 and request a duplicate license. The fee for a duplicate license is $25.00. In your written request please include your name, your address and your New Jersey license number. Please enclose with your written request a $25.00 certified check or money order made payable to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

  4. When do I have to notify the Board of a change of address?

    New Jersey licensed chiropractors must notify the Board in writing by certified mail within 10 days of any change in the mailing address or address of record on file with the Board. The notice must specify whether the address is a residence or an employment address.

  5. Do I need malpractice insurance?

    All doctors of chiropractic licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey who maintain a professional practice or have responsibility for patient care shall be covered by chiropractic malpractice insurance. (Regulation N.J.A.C. 13:44E ‐ 1A.6)

  6. How many continuing education credits am I re quired to complete each biennial renewal period?

    A licensee applying for biennial renewal must have completed, during the preceding biennial period, 30 continuing educational credits in order to qualify for the renewal of his or her license. Two credits must be completed in the study of State laws and rules governing chiropractic professional ethics or recordkeeping and documentation as it pertains to the practice of chiropractic in New Jersey, and a minimum of two credits must be completed in nutrition education.

  7. How many continuing education credits can I carr y over into the succeeding biennial renewal period.

    A licensee who completes more than 30 continuing chiropractic credits may apply no more than 7 of the excess credits to the continuing chiropractic education requirements for the following biennial period only.

  8. Where do I send my continuing education certificates?

    Do not send documentation to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners unless you receive an official "continuing education audit" letter. If your name is selected at random, you will then be provided with specific instructions and you will have 14 days from receipt of the continuing education audit letter to submit all of the pertinent documents to the Board. N.J.A.C . 13:44E ‐ 1A.5(q)2 requires that each licensee maintain all evidence of completion of the continuing education requirement for a period of not less than five years after satisfaction of the credits.

  9. How many credits can I obtain from distance lear ning courses such as home study or Internet courses?

    A licensee shall complete no more than 12 of the total continuing chiropractic education credits by asynchronous distance learning courses where the instructor and the learner are not in direct, live communication during the course.

  10. Can I earn more than 12 continuing chir opractic education credits from live webinars?

    You can earn more than 12 continuing chiropractic education credits from live webinar courses (synchronous distance learning activities) that are a live didactic learning experience where the instructor and learner are in direct live communication during the course.

  11. How many continuing chiropractic education credit s am I required to complete if I'm a new licensee and a recent graduate of a chiropractic education program?

    A new licensee who completed an accredited graduate chiropractic education program within 12 months of the commencement of the biennial registration period is not required to complete the continuing education requirements for the biennial period.

  12. How often must I renew my license?

    The renewal period is biennial. All chiropractic licenses expire every two years on August 31 of the odd ‐ numbered year, regardless of the date of initial licensure.

  13. Can I place my license on "inactive" status?

    Yes, you may place your license on inactive status by checking "yes" for the appropriate question on the biennial renewal application, or you may send a written request to do so to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. However, be advised that placing your license on inactive status means that you may not practice in the State of New Jersey.

  14. How can I reactivate my license?

    In order to reactivate a license, a reinstatement application must be requested directly from the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Upon receipt of a letter requesting the application, the reinstatement application and the relevant instructions will be mailed. The applicant is required to present satisfactory proof that he or she has maintained proficiency by completing the continuing education credit hours required for the renewal of an active license.

  15. If my license is expired, how can I reinstate it?

    In order to reinstate a license, a reinstatement application must be requested directly from the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Upon receipt of a letter requesting the application, the reinstatement application and the relevant instructions will be mailed. The applicant is required to present satisfactory proof that he or she has maintained proficiency by completing the continuing education credit hours in order to become current.
