What is required to obtain licensure as a landscape architect in New Jersey?
An applicant for licensure as a landscape architect shall hold a bachelor's or higher degree in landscape architecture from an accredited curriculum from a college or university and have engaged in practical landscape architectural work for four (4) years after completion of the educational requirement and successfully complete the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) administered by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB).
How does one become initially licensed as a landscape architect in New Jersey?
An applicant may apply to the Board prior to sitting for the LARE. The applicant shall request from, complete and return to the Board an application form together with the application fee. The applicant shall also request college transcripts be mailed directly to the Board office by the college/university. Work verification forms will be sent to applicant's employers to verify employment. Once the application is complete (which includes application form, reference forms, college transcripts and work verification forms), the Board shall consider and may approve the applicant to take the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) through the Council of Landscape Architect Registration Boards (CLARB).

What are the educational requirements?
An applicant for licensure must have a bachelor's or high degree in landscape architecture from a university having a landscape architecture curriculum accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) or other academic program approved by the Committee pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:27-8.4. The applicant shall arrange for the college or university to send an official transcript directly to the Board. The applicant shall be responsible for ensuring that the Board receives the transcript.
What are the experience requirements?
An applicant must have engaged in practical landscape architectural work for four (4) years after completion of the educational requirement set forth in N.J.A.C. 13:27-8.5(a)1, at least two of which the applicant having worked on a full-time basis under the supervision of a licensed landscape architect, architect, professional planner or professional engineer.
How do I become licensed as a landscape architect in New Jersey if I hold a landscape architect license in another state?
An applicant who holds a license in good standing as a landscape architect from any other state, territory or possession of the United States provided that the requirements for licensure or certification of the issuing agency are substantially equivalent to those of the Board and has passed the CLARB Uniform National Examination (UNE) or Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) or holds a current CLARB council record. Applicants holding CLARB council record shall arrange for CLARB to forward his/her CLARB council record to the Board; and meet the requirements for initial licensure which requires the applicant hold a bachelor's or higher degree in landscape architecture in an accredited landscape architecture curriculum from a college or university and has engaged in practical landscape architectural work for four (4) years after completion of the educational requirement and has successfully completed the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) administered by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB).
NOTE: If applicant has a CLARB Council record, the application must be completed entirely even though some of the information is duplicated in the CLARB council record.
When does my Landscape Architect Licensure have to be renewed?
All landscape architect licenses issued by the Board shall be expire on May 31st of the even-numbered years. A licensee who seeks renewal of the license shall submit a completed renewal application, a statement that the licensee has successfully completed the continuing education requirement pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:27-8.11 and the renewal fee as set forth in N.J.A.C. 13:27-8.21 prior to the expiration date of the certificate.
How many continuing education hours are required for license renewal?
A certificate holder shall not be required to obtain continuing education hours during the first biennial renewal period in which the licensee first obtains licensure. “Continuing education (CE) hour” means one 60-minute clock hour of an educational activity with no less than 50 minutes of instructional content within the hour.
Currently all licensees shall complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education. A licensed landscape architect shall only receive continuing education credit for continuing education successfully completed during the biennial period in which the continuing education was completed and no continuing education hours may be carried over into a succeeding biennial period.
Can I place my landscape architectural certification on “inactive” status?
“Yes” a landscape architect has the option of putting their license on “inactive status”. A licensee electing inactive status shall not practice or hold him/herself out as a landscape architect. There is NO FEE to place your license on inactive status.
I let my license lapse, what are the requirements for reinstatement?
The licensee is required to pay a reinstatement fee and all past delinquent biennial renewal fees as set forth in N.J.A.C. 13:27-8.21 and provide the Board with documentation of proof he or she has completed the continuing education credits required for each biennial licensure period.
How do I change my address with the Board?
Licensed Landscape Architects are required to report to the Board, in writing, any change in address within 30 days after the effective date of that change. Failure to notify the Board of any change of address may result in disciplinary action pursuant to N.J.S.A. 45:1-21(h).
I am applying to another state for licensure, what information is needed to be provided to the board?
Depending on that State's requirements, you may need to have a letter of good standing and/or verification of licensure submitted to that State Board. Sometimes a particular state board has its own form that needs to be completed. Send a request for letter of good standing and/or verification of licensure, the other state's form (if applicable) as well as a check made payable to the “NJ Board of Architects” in the amount of $25.00. Information will include: initial license date, expiration date, LARE grades (if taken through NJ) and any disciplinary action, if applicable.
